The Charles M. Pratt House

National Register of Historic Places

Casa Barranca (the Charles M. Pratt House), a national historic landmark, is an American Arts and Craft style ultimate bungalow built in 1909 by the preeminent architects Charles and Henry Greene.

One of their most beloved bungalows, it is truly a sublime example of the zen-like art that is the craftsman heritage. Sitting upon a ridgeline overlooking the idyllic Shangri-La of Ojai, California, this historic home was originally known as The Pratt House before being named Casa Barranca, meaning house by a winding river gorge by the owners Charles and Mary Pratt.

The house is now open as a vacation rental for people from around the world to enjoy. The 5,000-square-foot home sits within a 12-acre lot and includes five bedrooms, four bathrooms, three porches, a fully stocked kitchen, multiple indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and outdoor dining areas.

The estate also features a pool and hot tub, an organic garden and orchard, and a 1,400-square-foot yoga studio—making it a memorable place to immerse oneself in the wild and idyllic beauty of Ojai for a personal getaway or private group retreat.

In keeping with its heritage, the house is intended for those who will respect the sanctity and peace of the land, the home and its neighbors. Our guests use their time here to slow down and immerse themselves in the quiet beauty of nature while still enjoying the many amenities of the household.

THE ESTATE VISUAL TOUR

Move through Casa Barranca (the Charles M. Pratt House), from its historic interiors to its open-air living spaces, wellness amenities and surrounding landscape.

Welcome to the Craftsman Spirit

The Great Room is the heart of Casa Barranca and the first interior space to welcome guests. Serving as the central connection between the living quarters and dining areas, it introduces the craftsmanship, natural materials and thoughtful details found throughout the estate.

Rich woodwork, elegant lighting and generous natural light create an atmosphere that feels both impressive and deeply inviting. Fireplaces anchor the room at either end, while expansive glass doors open toward the valley and allow indoor and outdoor living to flow together.

The Perfect Place to Dine.

Both striking and straightforward, the Dining Room welcomes its guests with high ceilings, a warm hearth, and an idyllic yet simple decor. An intimate space, this room is a wonderful exposé of the American Craftsmen style blended richly with subtle tones of Oriental influence.

Four different types of wood (redwood, Port Orford cedar, maple, and fir) accentuate the soft lighting of the picturesque wall sconces designed by Tiffany’s, while the impressive jewel-laden hanging fixture captures the eye with its Chinese paper lantern-like delicacy. Open the windows and let the fresh air accompany your conversation, or enjoy cooler nights with round-table revelry around a fire.
